Deon T. Miles ’97

Deon is an Associate Chemistry Professor at The University of the South, a top-40 liberal arts institution located in Sewanee, TN. He received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002. During his time at Sewanee, he has mentored several students from underrepresented groups in the sciences in his research laboratory. Deon has served on several University committees, including Promotion and Tenure, Strategic Planning for Diversity, and Athletic Facilities Assessment. Deon is Sewanee’s NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative, where he helps students in their application for the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Also in this role, he is a member of the selection committee for the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame. Deon is a facilitator for the Associated Colleges of the South’s Summer Teaching and Learning Workshop, which is a week-long series of meetings designed to help faculty members become better teachers. Deon has returned to campus on several occasions to speak with current students about life after Wabash. He is an ordained deacon at Silverdale Baptist Church. Deon, his wife, Petrise, and their two sons live in Chattanooga, TN.
