Wamidan World Music Ensemble Artistic Director James Makubuya promised "hot folk dances from around the world," "hot jazz arrangements," and a "variety of music not to be missed" for the Fall 2008 Wamidan and Jazz Combo Concert, and the musicians and dancers delivered on those promises Wednesday night in Salter Hall.
Wamidan brought extraordinary energy, grace, and a fantastic madinda number to the first half, while the Jazz Combo, under the direction of Steve Robinett, walked out everything from an Elvis Costello tune to the bossa nova in the second.
In promising opening concerts for both ensembles, Wamidan was bolstered by its partnership with Depauw University, which brings not only more than a dozen dancers and instrumentalists, but also new dances, including a Tahitian folk number that was a highlight of Wednesday night's performance. Wamidan will also hit the road later this academic year, visiting venues at Augustana College, Dayton, and Chicago, among other destinations.
