Jupiter String Quartet performs Wednesday

The Visiting Artists Series will offer the Wabash and Crawfordsville community a prize-winning string quartet performance Wednesday night.

The Jupiter String Quartet, an ensemble of four young outstanding string players from the Cleveland Institute of Music, will perform at 8 p.m. in Salter Hall in the Fine Arts Building.

The Quartet won first prize in the Fischoff Competition in May and then went on to win the even more prestigious Banff competition in Canada. Following their American tour, they will perform coast to coast in Canada in 2005.

The Jupiter Quartet will tackle an ambitious program Wednesday: Mozart’s String Quartet in D major, K. 499; Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 3, Op. 43; and Schumann’s Quartet in A major, Op. 41, No. 3.

Those who attended the concert by last year’s Fischoff winners will recall the extraordinary energy of the young Cleveland musicians, said Larry Bennett, music department chairman.

The Jupiter Quartet will also offer a workshop for four Wabash College student string players at noon Wednesday on the Salter stage. The workshop is open to the public.

As with all Visiting Artists programs, the Jupiter Quartet performs free of charge. The workshop and concert are open to the entire community. Tickets are available at the Ball Theatre Box Office.
