Fourth Annual Electronic Music on Thursday Eve

The Wabash College Music Department will present the fourth annual Soundscapes Concert of electronic music at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, in Salter Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Center.

The program will feature works by students, faculty, contemporary, and historic composers of electronic music.

“We are excited to be bringing electronic music to West Central Indiana,” says Wabash music professor Peter Hulen.

After establishing electronic music studios 24 years ago, the College has state-of-the-art equipment to perform it in multi-channel surround sound. Wabash recently added new courses in electronic music history, and digital sound synthesis.

According to research done by Hulen, electronic music has enjoyed a presence at the College for almost half a century. The University of Illinois Experimental Music Studio first performed a program of electronic music at the college in 1970. At the time, students in Wabash’s new Music Department were individually studying electronic music. Nearly 25 years later, a Wabash professor assembled equipment for an electronic music studio so a new course could be offered and students could create electronic music. Over time, electronic music studio facilities were modernized and upgraded. Individual student works were performed from time to time. This current series of Soundscapes concerts is a recently established tradition for spotlighting electronic music at the College.

“With well-developed facilities for creating electronic music,” says Hulen, “and with courses teaching the subject in a variety of ways, we are glad to be able to properly perform this type of music.”

The concert is free and open to the public.
