Between worlds

I focused on children for this assignment because of their ability to ignore the presence of a camera.
Adults and older kids tend to pose when they see a camera. But young
children quickly move past that and continue with their lives. This little
girl was looking directly into the camera yet showed no concern for it.
That detachment from the need to alter one’s image allowed me to
more fully capture the truth as I saw it in the scene. She seems at the
threshold of childhood and adulthood, turning her back to the circle of
children and recognizing the adult world with her eye contact with the
camera. And the wonderful light captures her intriguing expressiveness
and individuality.
David Brown ’02 is a chemistry major who took his first course in photography last fall.
