David Shipler: Discussions on the Impact of Poverty

    Location: Center Hall: 216
    Date: 02/20/19
    Time: 4:15PM

Families who exist at or near the poverty line even as they work face multiple interacting challenges. The chain reactions among the issues they face are often surprising: for example, how poor housing can lead to a medical problem (children’s asthma in particular), which can lead to unpaid bills, damage a credit rating, and result in a high interest rate for a car loan. Or, how the lack of government housing subsidies can mean a rent payment so high that it squeezes out money for food, resulting in children’s malnutrition.  (Refreshments available at 4 PM.)
