    Description:

"The New Ben-Hur (2016) in a Changing World"

The reception of the “new” and highly anticipated Ben-Hur at its opening in August 2016 was mixed. Reviewers criticized this re-imagined version, with its heavier reliance on the 1880 novel rather than the iconic 1959 film, as one that clearly attempts to target a faith-based audience with mixed results. This presentation looks at the new film’s greater emphasis on issues such as freedom and redemption and the clash of civilizations, as well as its simultaneous deflation of homoerotic tensions.
