In 1920, Czech playwright Karl Capek published his famous play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) and introduced the term “robot” to the English language. Taking Capek’s groundbreaking work as a starting point, Mac Rogers’ new play Universal Robots offers a compelling alternate history of the Twentieth Century, imagining the invention of the robot in 1921 Czechoslovakia and chronicling the shocking consequences of that invention right up to the present day. Part science fiction thriller, part love story, part political allegory, Universal Robots is a riveting story of war, faith, art and technology.
