After the Bell: Nobody’s Perfect – Linus Pauling’s Impossible DNA Structure: Virtual Wabash , 7:00PM
Sometimes, brilliant people make very public mistakes. Two-time Nobel laureate Linus Pauling did just that as he tried to be the first in the race to determine the structure of DNA. How can such a successful scientist fail so spectacularly? What is the role of failure in science? How should one react to this failure? We will discuss what we might learn from this lesser-known hiccup in a major historical moment in scientific advancement.
Laura Wysocki, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Department Chair
Dr. Laura Wysocki began teaching at Wabash College in 2011 and specializes in Organic Chemistry. Dr. Wysocki has two research interests: the synthesis and study of fluorescent dye derivatives and science communication. She has always been inspired by the interdisciplinary nature of science and enjoys working with undergraduates in her laboratory exploring new ideas. She has recently taught special topics courses in natural product synthesis, the chemistry of the pharmaceutical industry, and dye chemistry. When not in her laboratory, she can be found spending time with her family, Olmy Olmstead '04 and their daughter Abigail, supporting her students and colleagues across campus, and cheering on her favorite sports teams.
