Cultural (Mis)Representation: US Produced 'Narcoculture' and the Latinx Response
This presentation focuses on the novel American Dirt (2020) and how it projects a white American perspective onto the brown bodies of migrants. In particular, my presentation will show some of the ways in which cultural traditions are misunderstood and narco-stereotyping is incorporated within the story. My work seeks to show how the novel's controversial content, and the alleged identity bias in the book's publication, act as another form of cultural imperialism, in particular at a time when minority and migrant voices are largely muted.
