“Mallarmé, Manet, and the Plein-air Eclogue"
This paper offers a preliminary sketch, in the spirit of open-air oil painting, that reads Stéphane Mallarmé’s monumental poem “L’Après-Midi d’un faune” [The Afternoon of a Faun] as an ars poetica inspired by the artist’s landscape sensibilities. The poem expresses an affirmation through which Mallarmé evokes air and atmosphere as a means to liberate his lyric from the weight of stylization and affectation, as well as from the oppression of mimetic representation that occludes the possibility of poetry itself. And it is painting that inspires this melodious breeze. Specifically, Édouard Manet’s first foray into plein-air paintings in the early 1870s generated an ecopoetics inspired by an acute sense of air, wind, and light that I read as influencing the final version of Mallarmé’s “L’Après-Midi.”
