About the Original Work:

Title: 10 Stria (1977) by John Chowning

Composer: John Chowning

Notes: This rigorously composed work was the result of early experiments in FM synthesis by John Chowning. Using high-level computer programming to organize and synthesize the sounds, Chowning sought to develop a work based on naturally occurring inharmonic ratios between carrier signals and modulators. Writing computer code to compose using the organizational principle of the Golden Mean, the result is an inharmonic piece for 26 sine wave instruments, each programmed to play varying notes with a variety of possible envelopes.
