Blackboard 'My Courses' links are pointing to Blackboard website

User needs access to his "My Courses" module, but the links send him to the Blackboard website.

Resolution:

Went through "My Wabash/layout" and removed "Notifications from Blackboard" that had bad links on it.

Can I get news from any news source delivered to MyWabash desktop?

Several news sources offer news feeds which can be streamed to your Blackboard (MyWabash) homepage. There are several default ones, such as Google and New York Times, that you can enable using the 'Content' button on your homepage.

If you would like to see news from a source that is not available currently on Blackboard, contact the helpdesk at helpdesk@wabash.edu and we will look into adding that content to the server.

Cannot Login using the AOL browser

Users complain about having to sign in over and over, and about getting random "Access Denied" messages. This appears to be exclusively from using AOL. And, mainly using AOL 9.0, the latest version. And, it only happens while using AOL's built-in browser.

Solution: Don't use AOL's built-in browser. AOL users should use the AOL software to connect and log in, then minimize it and use either straight, native, Internet Explorer, or else something like Mozilla FireFox.

Digital Drop Box

How to use the Digital Drop Box

The Digital Drop Box lets you send files to your professor (and vise-versa). It has a number of advantages over sending files as attachments in emails.

  • Submissions are Time-stamped
  • Submissions are linked to the Gradebook

Getting Started:

Your Digital Drop Box is in the TOOLS area of your course site.

ALWAYS use the SEND FILE button. The "Add File" button simply uploads your file so that you have access to it.

How can I change the layout of the modules on my MyWabash homepage?

After you have logged into MyWabash, click on the   button in the upper right-hand corner.

You will be taken to the following screen:

After you have arranged the module in the order you wish to see them, press the 'Submit' button.

How can I find out more about Blackboard and its capabilities?

Students and Instructors can learn more about Blackboard as well as view a number of tutorials and tipsheets at Blackboard's training site. Go to http://behind.blackboard.com to find out more. You will need to use the 'Create' button to create a login and password for the site before you can access the information.

How can I get modules like the New York Time and Google on my MyWabash homepage?

From the main page (after you login), click on the  button.

Here you will see a list of content modules that are available for you to add to your MyWabash homepage:

After making your selection, click the save button and the module will be added to your MyWabash homepage.
You can then click on the  button on the MyWabash login screen.

You will be taken to the following screen:

Here you can choose the order of the modules and what side of the page they appear on. After you are done here, click the 'Submit' button.

How do I create a survey in Blackboard
In the organization/class control panel, there is a link for the Survey Manager, located in the Assessment box. Create a multiple-choice survey. After the survey is created go to Control Panel/Documents and use the drop down with the red ball next to it, and select "Survey" and press Go. Then "Modify" the survey and set the "Do you want to make the link visible?" to yes and set the "Display After" date to yesterday and the "Display Until" date as the date you want the survey to be finalized.
How to Hide Gradebook until ready for viewing

Course > CONTROL PANEL > MANAGE COURSE MENU  > Tools > Modify > My Grades > Change option to Unavailable

Remember to change this back to Available when the grades are ready for Students to view.

I cannot get logged into Blackboard. When I try I get an error message that states I don't have the right credentials. How do I fix that?

This error is caused by an incorrect security setting on your computer. In order to function, Blackboard needs to be able to execute scripts on your computer.

To activate scripts in Internet Explorer, look in Tools -> Internet Options -> Security Tab.

Now, click on the "Internet" zone icon (the globe) at the top of the screen. Next, click on the "Custom Level" button at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down the page until you find the "Scripting" section and be sure "Active Scripting" is enabled.

Some users are concerned about running scripts on their Web pages. While some scripts are harmful, in order to use Blackboard you must have scripting enabled. There are no scripts within the Blackboard system that will harm your computer in any way. If you want, you can turn off scripting again when you are done with your Blackboard session.

I'm trying to take one of the quizzes in my class, but the quiz screen is blank.
This problem is usually caused by a "Popup Blocker." If your instructor has created the quiz so that it pops up in a new window and you have a popup blocker installed it may permit the quiz window to open but the window will be blank. Try disabling your popup blocker in your browser.
INST - Adding an item to the left navigation menu
In the course, go to the Control Panel and click on Manage Course Menu and then "Add Tool Area". Select "Groups" (or whichever section you want) and then submit the form.
INST - Adding multiple course documents at once

In your course's control panel, click on Course Documents and then look at the drop down box on the right and select "Document Package". The documents will need to be in a zip file to upload. Try to keep each zip file under 10 megs.

INST - Can I measure the use of discussion boards in a course?

In your course, go to the Control Panel, and under Assessment there is a link for Course Statistics.

Select the report "Accesses by Forum" and select the dates and users you want in the report, submit the form and a report with the counts for each discussion board and the total for all of the discussion boards will appear with a pie chart.

INST - Displaying Test Results and Answers in Blackboard

If you want to display to the student the exam scores and correct answers, do the following:

If within your course, you go to Control Panel\Content Areas\Assignments\Exams\Exam1 then press the Modify button for the specific exam, then the "Modify the test options" link
and finally select the Test Feedback option "Detailed Results, Correct Answers and Feedback", you should get the results you are looking for.

Instructors,
To change the display of an item's result in the gradebook, from a to their actual score, please do the following:

  • Click on the item name in the Gradebook
  • Click on "Item Information"
  • Select "Score" from the dropdown menu next to the "Display As" option

INST - How can I add an extra credit item to the gradebook?

Create an Extra Credit column, worth zero points, but yes for affecting the gradebook total. Then, it won't affect anyone's grade negatively, because all they get is 0, but if they do get any points, it will affect their grade positively.

INST - How can I determine the score to letter amount?

Within your course, go to Control Panel > Gradebook> Gradebook Settings> Manage Display Options  and then click on Letter - Modify, and then you can either view or change the grades.

INST - How can I make banners for my course site?

A banner is a visual image that you can place in your course site to spice things up a bit. Here's an example:

There are several websites which can help you make a banner. The following is a sampling of some of these sites:

http://www.3dtextmaker.com
http://www.cooltext.com/logos/index.xhtml
http://www.flamingtext.com/start.html

INST - How do I create an exam with 5/13 random questions?

The instructor should use a random block question in the exam to randomly draw 5 questions from the pool of 13 questions.

INST - How do I display a class survey?
After survey creation, go to the Control Panel, then Assignments.
On the right side of the screen, the is a red+ image with a drop down selection next to it. Select "Survey", then select the survey you created.
After, click on the "Modify the survey options" link, and adjust the visibility in Survey Availability.
INST - How do I drop the lowest score in the Gradebook

Blackboard does not support "dropping the lowest grade", but what you can do is the following which may work for you:

1. Add an item to the Gradebook, and call it something like "Minus Lowest Quiz Score

2. Make the item worth negative points equal to the number of points for the corresponding quiz. For example, if your quizzes are worth 20 points, the new item will be worth -20 points. This will also decrease the total number of points for the class (in the Total column) by 20 points.

3. Make sure you display the item as Score, you make it visible to students, and you include it in the Gradebook score calculations.

4. Check each student's scores to determine the one that should be dropped.

5. Click the link for each student under the new column, and enter the scores with a minus sign in front (ex. -20). Alternatively, you can click the link of the column, click Item Grade List, and enter the negative scores that way.

INST - How do I move/copy items into different folders

In the Control Panel, look in the current folder where the document resides. To the right of the listing, there is a "Copy" button. Click on that, and select the course and folder in box #2. If you want to move instead of copy, select the "Delete item after copy?" option.

INST - How do I order announcements in my course?
The announcements are listed date descending unless one is marked as permanent.
Make sure "Always show this announcement on the course's main page" is set to "No", and the listings will be correctly ordered.
INST - How to give a user guest access to your course.

You need three settings to be turned on in order for a guest (i.e. any non-enrolled user) to access a content area of a course or organization, or its Announcements or Staff Information areas:

1. Guest access needs to be turned on at the course level (Course Control Panel > Settings > Guest Access)

2. The relevant navigation item on the course menu needs to allow guest access (Course Control Panel > Manage Course Menu > Modify for the item in question)

3. The "Content Area" tool, "Announcements" tool, "Staff Information" tool need to allow guest access (Course Control Panel > Manage Tools > Tool Availability)

INST - Missing buttons in Gradebook

Sometimes the HTML table in the gradebook gets in an unusual state and gets really wide. If you can not find the functional buttons Manage Items,Gradebook Settings, Weight Grades, Download Grades and Upload Grades, be sure to scroll your browser to the right and you should see them.

INST - Send Email to all student advisees from advisees course
To send an email in the advisees course, go to the control panel of the course, and then send email. All other communications are disabled in the advisee courses for privacy reasons.
INST- How can I copy materials from a previous course to a new course

Step 1 - Export course materials from previous course

The Export Course function is useful when course materials will be reused later to teach a new set of Students. Export packages are downloaded as compressed .ZIP files and can be imported into Blackboard Learning System in the same format. Do not unzip an Export package or remove files from the package, otherwise, the package will not be imported correctly.  *If your file unzips itself, you may need to check your Browser's settings/preferences (example: in Safari, Preferences, General, make sure that the Open "safe" files is not checked).

  1. To open the Export Course page, click Export Course in Course Options on the Course Control Panel.
  2. A receipt page will appear after selecting Course Materials and clicking Submit. The exported package must be downloaded from this page and saved to the local computer (We suggest the desktop). Select Click here to download the generated package file to save the file. The archived package will not be stored in the Blackboard file system! If the package is not downloaded from this page it will be lost, and the user must go through the export operation again. The download may take some time.

Step 2 - Import course materials to new course

Instructors may use the Import Package page to upload information into the course. For example, if they have exported a course then may import the whole course package, or selected parts of the course through Import Package.

  1. Go to the control panel of the new course.
  2. To open the Import Course package page, click Import Package in Course Options in the Course Control Panel.
  3. Either enter the path to the course package or click Browse to search for the course package (We suggest the desktop).
  4. Select the option for each content area and tool in the course that should be imported.
  5. Press "Submit" to start the import process. The import may take some time.
NOTE: Links to parts of a course that are not included in the export package will break when the links appear in the destination course. For example, if there is a link to a Test in a content area and Tests, Surveys and Pools are not exported, the link to the Test will break.
Mac OS X Login Problems
Try a "Software Update". Click on the apple icon in the top left corner of the screen. Then click on "Software Update...". The "Software Update" program will launch and see if there are any software updates for your Mac OS X computer. If it finds one, click on the "Install Item" button at the bottom right of the "Software Update" window. You may have to enter a password to update and agree to software licenses too. You may need to do this a few times to get all Apple software up-to-date.
My courses contain 'No Announcements.' How do I get rid of this?

To remove the 'No Announcements', do the following

1. Login to Blackboard
2. Click on the pencil in the My Courses box
3. Uncheck Display Announcements for the older courses. The current semester's courses may get announcements.
4. Click Submit

My public Organization is not visible to all

In your organization, under control panel click on Manage Tools and verify that all sections are available to the public. If an organization is public, that does not necessarily make the parts of the organization available to the public.

Verify the following are set in the organization properties:

Set Organization Availability

- Do you want this organization available to users? YES

Allow Guest Access

- Do you want guests to be able to access this organization? YES

Pop-up blockers and MyWabash.

Pop-up blockers should not be used with MyWabash as they can prevent some things like the equation editors and test screens to show up when clicked. You should disable the pop-up blocker for the duration of your MyWabash session, especially if you are taking an exam.

Problems students might experience with Blackboard

Below are a few common problems students might experience with Blackboard along with solutions on how to solve them.

General Information

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 is the college standard, and works most fluently with Blackboard. To download Internet Explorer 6 visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx
Firefox, Mozilla, or Safari Browsers are also compatible with Blackboard.

If you see errors such as:

• No authentication credentials were provided with the request.

• An error occurred in the authentication module: Error occurred while trying to lookup the current session.

• You need to login twice

Cookies and Security must be enabled for Blackboard to work properly.

In order to login in, you MUST enable cookies in your browser.

To enable Cookies:

Go to the Tools menu > Internet Options > Privacy. Move the slider to Medium High, Medium, or Accept all cookies,

To set Security:

Go To Internet Options Security Internet. Click the Default Level button or Set your Security setting to Medium.

Viewing Documents

Microsoft Office 2002 (XP) is the college standard software and may be required to view and transfer files to and from the instructor/student.

If you do not have Microsoft Office 2002 (XP) installed on their computer, you will need to download one, or more, of the Microsoft viewers. This will allow you to view documents created by Microsoft, without actually having the Microsoft Office suite installed on their computer. There is a viewer for MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. All college computers have Microsoft Office XP installed.

Adobe Acrobat (PDF) is a file format some instructors use for documents. You can download a free acrobat viewer to view pdf files. This plug-in does not allow you to create or edit PDF files. This plug-in is installed on all college computers.

Flash/Shockwave is a common format for view animations on the Internet. This plug-in is installed on all college computers.

Quizzes on Blackboard

Resubmitting a Quiz after changing answer error

When you submit a quiz on Blackboard without answering all the questions, a alert box appears asking if you would like to go back and answer the missed question. After you answer the question and try to submit again one of two things can happen – Blackboard will not recognize you have answered the question and ask you to answer it again or you will be told you have already submitted the quiz.

In order to save the screen to show the instructor you can go to File Save As Webpage and then email your instructor the webpage file.

General Tips

Below are some helpful tips to make completing quizzes on Blackboard more successful. However – if you do run into problems completing quizzes or surveys, please contact your instructor.

  1. Do not double click the submit button
  2. Do not open other web pages unless asked to do so
  3. Clean your cache (Temporary Internet Files) before opening the quiz
Go to Tools Internet Options General Delete Files and Delete Cookies
  4. If possible do not complete the quiz during peak times (8-12)
  5. Turn off Pop-ups in Internet Explorer or add Blackboard to your safe list
Go to Tools Pop-up Blocker Turn Off Pop-up Blocker OR
Go to Tools Pop-up Blocker Pop-up Blocker Settings Type in http://my.wabash.edu
  6. Do not use the back button to return to a previous question or to exit a quiz.

Known Issues/Problems when using Blackboard

The Collaboration tool (Virtual Classroom/Lightweight Chat) does not load using Internet Explorer.

If it is necessary for your course to use the Collaboration tools you can use Netscape. You can download Netscape from The Netscape Website (http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp)

The font in Blackboard is small and I can't see the words.

This problem usually occurrs with people that are using Internet Explorer and also have Eudora installed on their computer. Due to a conflict between the two programs, the browser is using the font setting from the Eudora settings. To change this in Eudora, go to Tools --> Options --> Fonts --> Message & select Medium.

The only down side to this is that your messages will appear in a larger font now.

The list of courses in the 'My Courses' box is too big - can I delete some of them?

Over the course of time, several classes will begin to show up in the 'My Courses' box on the Blackboard main page. In order to edit this view of courses, click on the small icon in the upper right-hand corner of the 'My Courses' box that has the image of a pencil in it.

You will be taken to a page where you can delete past semester's courses from your current course view by clicking the 'Show Course' column.

You can also add links here to external web pages that may contain course information that you maintain outside of Blackboard.
