The Pillowman — February 2009 (2)

two men making a face

Luke Robbins turns in his finest performance to date in the role of Michal in the Wabash Theater's production of Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman. Spencer Elliott plays Katurian, Michal's protective brother. The play is deeply moving, contains graphic language, and carries mature themes. The performances are extraordinary and the subject matter is difficult.

In his role as Katurian, Spencer Elliott leaves it all on stage — he's a writer, a murderer, and protector of his brother. He makes the audience love him, hate him, and fear him over the course of two disturbing hours of intense theater. His performance in The Pillowman is stunning.

As Tupolski, Matt Goodrich is supposed to be the "good cop," the thoughtful detective who is investigating a series of child murders. But he imagines the ultimate torture for a writer — he threatens to burn Katurian's stories, which he believes have inspired the murders.

Dan Masterson as Ariel is sympathetic to abused children and uses the full force of his police badge (and then some) to protect children like the one played by Dione Miles-Morillo in the Wabash production of The Pillowman.
