Little Giants Benefit from Offseason Work

Wabash College head cross country coach Roger Busch has been named the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Men's Coach of the Year.

Busch guided his 2010 Little Giant cross country team to a second place finish at Saturday's NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region and a team qualification for the upcoming NCAA Cross Country National Championship meet. The Wabash Red Pack has been ranked in the USTFCCCA national polls for most of the season and enter the nationals ranked 24th.

Senior Seth Einterz and juniors Kevin McCarthy, Donavan White, and Brian David each earned All-Region honors last week by finishing in the top-35 at the Great Lakes Regional race, held in Holland, Michigan and hosted by Hope College.

Wabash returns as a team to the NCAA National Championship meet for the first time since qualifying in 1998. The top-two teams in each region earn an automatic berth at nationals. The Little Giants' best finish at nationals came with a third place finish in 1995. Busch, a 1996 Wabash College graduate, competed for that Little Giant team and earned All-America honors with a sixth place individual finish.

Wabash also finished second in the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Championship race, held October 30 at Southmont Jr.-Sr. High School. Einterz, McCarthy, White, and David also earned All-NCAC honors at that meet, while freshman Jake Ponton was named the NCAC Men's Newcomer of the Year as the highest-finishing first year runner. The Little Giants also won the Indiana Little State meet earlier in the season and took the team title at the 2010 Wabash Hokum Karem.

The NCAA National Championship Meet will be held Saturday, November 20 at the H. J. Max Championship Cross Country Course in Waverly, Iowa. Complete meet information can be found here.
