In 1989 the men of the Malcolm X Institute expanded their volunteerism into the Crawfordsville community when they started the KQ&K Mentoring Program. The KQ&K Program is named after the three members who envisioned it; Keith Veal, Quadiru Kent, and Kenyatta Brame (created with getting the program running is Alonzo Weems’92). Members of the MXI spend two afternoons per week tutoring children from the Crawfordsville community after school.

The tutors are able to help the children with their schoolwork and give them lifelong learning skills, but the tutoring program actually helps the tutors as they learn the importance of volunteerism for the success of youth in the community. As Malcolm X once stated, "Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today", The Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies realize that they have a responsibility to help the youth as they help themselves. A desire to make a difference has shaped MXI men of all eras as it produces educators and civic leaders who work today to make a better tomorrow for the community.
