Know Indiana Course-Based Excursions

In October 2008, Elizabeth Morton introduced students from her Art 209: Art of the 20th Century class to contemporary American Indian art at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art in Central Indiana.  Pictured above, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, Ashely Holland, describes one of the museum's works of art.  Through the generosity of the Lilly Endowment, Inc., Know Indiana is able to fund such course-based excursions, which promote Indiana culture in the classroom.

The Know Indiana (KI) program supports opportunities for faculty and students to extend teaching and learning beyond the classroom into Indiana communites and cultural study sites where exploration inspires new ways of thinking and deepens the knowledge of the state.  KI course-based excursions strengthen course content while encouraging students to learn more about the cultural opportunities Indiana presents.  An art professor summed up the importance of excursion trips: They encourage students to "engage with real works of art while exposing them to one of Indiana's greatest cultural institutions."

Wabash faculty members seeking funding for a course-based excursion should submit a proposal with the following sections:

• Course title/number of students
• Purpose
• Trip description
• Trip timeline
• Budget narrative with estimate of the cost of transportation, fees, and meals.  Note: If using a College vehicle, mileage is rated at $0.40/mile.  Drivers are hired at $10/hour.  Meals associated with the trip should use the following expense guideline: up to $10/person for lunch, and up to $15/person for dinner.

Proposals should be submitted to Laura Conners.  The Dean of the College and the Division Chairs review all proposal submissions for funding approval on an ongoing basis.  We request no less than two weeks' advanced notice for KI trip proposals.  Faculty members receiving KI funding are required to submit a brief final report summarizing the trip and its impact in the classroom.  Did the trip have an impact on your (and your students') awareness of and/or appreciation for Indiana culture?  Reports should be submitted within two weeks following the course-based excursion.
