Know Indiana Course-Based Excursions
In December 2007, Stephen Webb took his Religion 171 class to visit St. Meinrad's Seminary in Southern Indiana to give his students of Early Church History a hands on experience of a real, working monastery. Through the generosity of the Lilly Endowment Inc., Know Indiana is able to fund course-based excursions that promote Indiana culture in the classroom.
Know Indiana can provide funding for course-based excursions to cultural sites in Indiana. These trips allow faculty to significantly enhance their curriculum as evidenced by the recent trips of Professor Jen Abbott’s Rhetoric of News Media class to WISH-TV in Indianapolis, Professor Ann Taylor’s Alternative Energy Sources class trip to Purdue University to meet with Purdue’s Solar Racing Team, and Professor Greg Huebner’s freshman tutorial trip to Madison, Indiana for an up-close look at the 19th century domestic architecture.
Faculty members seeking funding for a course-based excursion should create a proposal which includes the following sections:
• Purpose • Trip Description • Trip Timeline • Budget
Proposals should be submitted to Laura Conners. Proposal submissions are reviewed by the Dean of the College and the Division Chairs for funding approval on an ongoing basis. Faculty receiving Know Indiana grant funding are required to submit a brief final report summarizing the trip and its impact in the classroom. Final reports should be submitted within two weeks following the course-based excursion. Student comments regarding the event are useful for assessing the effectiveness of the Know Indiana program. Submission or questions can be directed to
