PRESENT INDIANA PROJECT (PIP)

Paid Summer RESEARCH

Commitment:  May 5 – June 27

Creative students wanted!!

Wabash College invites applications for the PRESENT INDIANA PROJECT (PIP).  Interviews and orientation to PIP will take place during February and March. Internships begin May 5th, and continue for eight (8) weeks.  Presentations will begin during New Student Orientation and will continue during the following academic year.  Interns must commit to the entire program.

PIP is funded by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc.  Stipends are $2668 + housing.  Students will be responsible for most of their own food; some group meals are likely.

Working with faculty and staff mentors, project interns will conceive, create, and make presentations about the rich heritage and culture of Indiana that demonstrate the quality of life in our state.

Interns will enjoy a degree of freedom in choosing topics of interest, but will work closely with faculty/staff mentors in the period before May 5th to define and focus their topics as well as determine the appropriate target audience.  Successful projects will help the target audience obtain a greater appreciation and enthusiasm for living in Indiana.

Topics may be chosen from Indiana History, the heritage of the peoples of Indiana, geography, the arts, sports, education or business & commerce.

Commitment:

If you are interested in participating, choose a tentative topic, or come to Center 112 to discuss ideas with David Clapp or to the Lilly Library to discuss with Jeff Beck.

Then write a one page essay describing the reasons for your interest in the topic, including:

     ·     Why you believe you would be a good candidate

     ·     How your research will contribute to your liberal arts education

     ·     The audience you plan to reach with your presentations

     ·     How you plan to research your topic

You may wish to mention similar projects in which you have been involved.

You MUST include the names of two faculty members who are familiar with your abilities to perform research and work independently.  The selection committee will ask these instructors to comment on your suitability.

All Wabash students are eligible for consideration, but we do encourage applications from native Hoosiers with a keen interest in their topic.

Deadline for submitting is Friday, February 22, 2008.

The application MUST be submitted via  Wabash Works!  and by email attachment to David Clapp.

Address your questions to David Clapp clappd@wabash.edu.
