In 1918, the Alpha-Kappa chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha opened its doors to the students of Wabash College. However, the rich history of Lambda Chi Alpha did not start with the actual chapter. The “Barbarians” were never a formal organization, but when they began in 1892, they set into motion the ideals and events that would eventually lead to the building of a solid foundation on which the Wabash Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha stands today. On May 20, 1918, the first 27 undergraduates of Lambda Chi Alpha were initiated to be members of the new house.

Lambda Chi Alpha has a very involved history at Wabash College. Over the years, members of Lambda Chi Alpha have served this campus through outstanding leadership, academically, and through athletics. Our Brothers and Associates continue to be devoted to the ideals and goals of Wabash College. This is clearly evident through our mottos: "Vir Quisque Vir" meaning "Every Man A Man" and "Calepa ta kala" meaning "Naught Without Labor."

Perhaps the most unique attribute of Lambda Chi Alpha is our method of Fraternal Education. Lambda Chi Alpha officially ended pledge ship in 1972 and replaced education with the Associate Membership program. This modern program is intended to overcome the major flaws of the pledge concept which assumes that every man's needs are the same. An Associate Member is given credit for what and who he is while helping him to grow as an individual. Instead of being isolated into second-class members of Lambda Chi Alpha, Associate Members are brought fully into the realm of active membership--attending chapter meetings and functions, voting, serving on committees, and helping to run one of the largest national Fraternities.

Today, Lambda Chi Alpha is the youngest of the 15 largest national social Fraternities; however, we have initiated the 4th highest number of men ever with over 250,000 initiated members at more than 300 colleges and universities internationally. Lambda Chi Alpha continues to be a leader in the fight against hazing, alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, and other challenges facing college students.

Whether it be excelling in the classroom, leading a student organization, participating in an IM game, or helping in the community, the Brothers and Associates of Lambda Chi Alpha are devoted to Wabash College and each other. They are leaders in their communities and and they constantly strive to attain the highest goals of Lambda Chi Alpha.
