The primary criteria for the President's Scholarship program are curriculum, class rank, cumulative high school GPA, and SAT and/or ACT scores, however, we also consider if the student's academic record is consistently strong. The amount of the scholarship award level may also be influenced by additional factors. These include the student's financial need, course selection relative to courses available at the student's high school, academic competition within the high school, and the diversity the student brings to the Wabash community, such as race, geographic, special talents, and demonstration of outstanding leadership. These additional factors may be considered as "plus factors" in the awarding of President's Scholarships. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25/4.0 to be considered. |
Merit-Based Scholarship Policies
Students selected as Lilly Award recipients are not eligible for additional Wabash Merit-Based Scholarships. Students selected to receive more than one of the other Wabash Merit-Based Scholarships will receive the monetary value of their highest award plus a maximum of an additional $1,000 to represent each Wabash Merit-Based Scholarship of a lesser monetary value. Maximum combination of merit-based funds, excluding Lilly Awards is capped at $23,000.
Wabash College is a member of the NCAA Division III. Consequently, we cannot consider athletic participation, ability, or leadership roles in the awarding of Wabash scholarships.
Scholarship Integration into Need-based Aid
By federal regulation, need-based financial aid can be no greater than a student's financial need. Therefore, if the student's need is greater than his merit award(s), the merit award(s) will be integrated into his overall need-based aid award. In limited cases, this may necessitate the reduction of merit award(s), but in no case will the aggregate scholarship/grant funds be less than the value of the merit award(s).
Outside Scholarships/Gifts
By federal regulation, need-based financial aid can be no greater than a student's demonstrated financial need. Therefore, when a student with need-based aid receives outside scholarships, his other aid must be reduced accordingly. As a benefit to the student, Wabash first applies the value of outside scholarship(s) against any self-help (loan and/or job) portion of the need-based award. In limited cases, and only after the self-help assistance had been eliminated, the balance reduces any institutional need-based aid. Outside scholarship(s) do not affect the value of merit-only awards unless the total of all awards exceeds the direct educational costs (tuition, fees, room and board charges). Outside scholarship checks must be sent to the Financial Aid Office in order to be processed. This policy does not apply to state or Federal Pell grants.
Scholarship Renewal/Duration Requirements
These scholarships are renewable annually provided the student attain the cumulative grade point average and the number of course credits required at the end of each academic year in order to make normal progress toward graduation. Students may appeal the loss of their scholarships if there are special circumstances that contributed to the loss of their scholarship. The process is initiated by making a written appeal to the Director of Financial Aid.
