Course Requirements

CLASS DISCUSSION (37.5 %)
Come to your discussion section prepared to discuss the assignments in a thoughtful way. Your discussion leader will hand out a statement about his or her criteria for grading discussion in the first week or two of class. Some discussion leaders may take attendance at lectures. If so, your lecture atten-dance will count as part of your discussion grade.

PAPERS (37.5 %)
Everyone will write two 4-5 page papers, on topics assigned by your discussion leader. These two 4-5 page papers will count as 2/3 of your total paper grade. The writing assignments that constitute the remaining 1/3 of your paper grade will be determined by your discussion leader. Some discussion leaders may ask you to write a third 4-5 page paper. Others may ask you to write a number of shorter papers, the total length of which will add up to 4-5 pages. Your discussion leader will let you know about the specific assignments for your section.

You may rewrite either of the two mandatory 4-5 page papers. Your discussion leader will tell you when the rewrites are due. Your discussion leader will also tell you whether you may rewrite the papers that constitute the remaining 1/3 of your paper grade. On any rewrite your final grade for the paper will be the average of the original grade and the grade for the revised paper.

FINAL EXAMINATION (25%)
Your discussion leader will announce the format of the examination shortly before the end of the semester.
