Why a Fellowship?

There are a wide range of alternatives to directly pursuing employment or graduate school after graduation.  Programs vary in structure, format, length, and focus, and many involve academic pursuits.  You may want to explore such alternatives if you do not yet know exactly what you want to do, if you are refining your interests and want to build your experience, or if you just want to pursue other options before seeking employment.

What is a Fellowship?

A fellowship* is a financed opportunity typically for post-graduate students (although sometimes offered to undergraduates) ranging from one month to several years. Fellowships are provided by a wide range of public and private organizations and institutions, and provide funds for any number of ventures: for example, research, travel, entrepreneurial pursuits, or professional/academic development. Their application process is often thorough and these are usually highly competitive. Many are focused on specific missions, yet others are extremely flexible and permit the pursuit of diverse interests.

*note that some employers refer to their entry-level new-hire programs as fellowships.  These are not the types of experiences we’re detailing here.  Those are filled through the normal job search/interviewing process.
