Talk by Bich Nimh Nguyen: Center Hall 216, 12:00PM

Author and Purdue creative writing professor, Bich Nimh Nguyen, will read from and talk about her critically acclaimed memoir, "Stealing Buddha's Dinner," which relates her family's harrowing departure from war-torn Saigon in 1975 when she was only 8 months old and her growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan in a dramatically alien culture. The book's dominating metaphor for her dual coming of age is food, American fast food, junk food, comfort food versus the traditional Vietnamese foods her grandmother makes in their home. But the book is about much more than food. Among many other things it is about growing up a precocious outsider, from a Buddhist background in a Christian culture, about growing up female, about family dynamics.
