There is no substitute for understanding language, culture, and politics of another country by spending time there.  As noted in Peterson's Guide to Four-Year Colleges 2002, "In addition to the 19 programs sponsored around the world by the Great Lakes College Association, Wabash students are encouraged to consider independently planned programs and to apply directly to universities abroad that interest them."

The Wabash College Off-Campus Study center currently offers opportunities for study abroad in over 140 countries. Each year, about fortyWabash men study off campus and experience a new city or country through taking classes, living with host families or students, and traveling during school breaks. In all cases, a Wabash student’s financial aid will be applied to the cost of his trip making the cost of a study abroad opportunity comparable in cost to a semester’s tuition at Wabash. Very few schools provide this service for their students.
