Indeed, his career on four continents is the epitome of cultural hybridity. A practicing Muslim, Lamidi is a fifth-generation Yoruba religious carver best known for his sculptures of Christian and Yoruba religious themes and cultural subjects. His body of work encompasses six decades and addresses these multiple identities. At 81 year of age, he is still active and carves daily. Richard Koenig usually works with pictures that are re-photographed in some fashion or another. This duplicative tactic is used as a way of exploring the inherent tension that exists within photography—the capacity to both depict and deceive, concurrently. As a result, the viewer is placed at a point where depiction and deception meet, and is left teetering between the two. Drawn from letters and journals, Terra Nova captures the epic sweep of times and personalities when the last places on the earth had not been conquered by man. Ted Tally’s play is a stirring, vast, tragic, but ultimately life affirming portrait of the best and worst in our natures. Since 1997, the Grammy nominated ensemble has taken a unique path, carving out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, genre-blurring collaborations, and inspirational outreach programs. With two member composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new work, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully bridging European, American, African, and Latin American traditions. Watch an interview and samples of the ensemble's playing recorded by Carnegie Hall for the premier of Daniel Bernard Roumain's work, "5 Chairs and 1 Table." April 21-24 Wabash College Theater presents The Tempest by William Shakespeare 8 p.m.—Ball Theater, Fine Arts Center Tickets are required This joyous play, the last of Shakespeare's extraordinary career, sums up his stagecraft with a display of seemingly effortless skill. Prospero, exiled Duke of Milan, living on an enchanted island, has the opportunity to punish and forgive his enemies when he raises a tempest that drives them ashore—as well as to forestall a rebellion, to arrange the meeting of his daughter, Miranda, with an eminently suitable young prince, and, more important, to relinquish his magic powers in recognition of his advancing age. Richly filled with music and magic, romance and comedy, the play's theme of love and reconciliation offers a splendid feast for the senses and the heart.
