As the name suggests, the exam will consist of problems representing basic skills. The goal is to be as close to perfection in these skills as possible.

  • The exam will count 10% of your grade.
  • Calculators and computers are not allowed.
  • You may take the Basic Skills Exam up to four times.
  • The score on your final attempt will be converted to a numerical grade as follows:
    • A score of 90 or above be a grade of 100.
    • A score from 80 to 89 will be a grade of 70.
    • A score from 70 to 79 will be a grade of 30.
    • A score below 70 will be a grade of 0.
    • As a bonus, a score above 90 on the first attempt will be a grade of 110.
  • There will be four weekly opportunities to take the exam. You may quit after any of them if you are satisfied with your grade. Otherwise, you may not miss one.
  • If you have a reasonable excuse to miss the exam at one of the scheduled times, you must take it at some time you arrange with your instructor. The makeup must be done within one day of the scheduled time.
  • If you miss an opportunity to take the exam or a makeup without a reasonable excuse, you forfeit any remaining opportunities to take it. Your grade will be based on your last attempt.
  • An excused absence from the Dean will be considered a reasonable excuse to miss the exam. The instructor will determine what other excuses are reasonable.
  • Exceptions to this policy may be made at the instructor's discretion in unusual circumstances.
