Course Description: Art 124--Photography "SP2004"This course is designed in two parts: First, and most significant, is a three and a half week summer traveling experience to the American West with the study of photography and our nomadic travels as a shared common experience. (Preceding this trip, three days of on campus course work and trip planning will take place. The second component occurs during the following fall semester when students will learn how to create final images in the darkroom and with the computer. An exhibition of student work, open to the community, with students making presentations about their photographs will be one assessable outcome of this experience. The course will address the same photographic and design issues as its "on-campus" counterpart Art 124--Photography. Students will learn the basics of black and white photography, including knowledge of the camera, film, darkroom, (traditional and digital). Basic design principles, vocabulary, and issues concerning creative photography will also be addressed. The "On the Road" component will include guest lectures, visits to historic sites, museum visits, journal writing, readings, and critiques. This component will also include camping, hiking, climbing, and require an adventurous spirit.
